The Megapacks are being installed at SpaceXAI's Colossus and Colossus 2 AI data centers in the Greater Memphis area. On the surface, this looks like a clean energy story: the world's most powerful AI infrastructure company betting nearly a third of a billion dollars on battery storage in six months.
It is not a clean energy story. Not yet. And the gap between what the headline says and what is actually happening on the ground in Memphis is exactly why LegacyGrid AI exists.
While SpaceX was buying Megapacks, it was also installing dozens of natural gas-burning turbines at the same Memphis facilities — without pollution controls and without federal permits. The emissions and noise from those turbines triggered a community backlash that has now reached federal court. Tesla Megapacks are utility-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage systems. Tesla's newer Megablock product combines four Megapacks around a single transformer into a single deployable unit. At $329 million for the first half of 2026 alone, SpaceX is one of the largest single buyers of utility-scale BESS in the United States. Elon Musk stated on SpaceX's Q2 earnings call that the company's "tentative target" is 20 gigawatts of power and cooling online by the end of 2027 — with a floor of approximately 15 gigawatts even if some projects run late.
For context: 20 gigawatts is roughly 20% of ERCOT's entire current installed generation capacity in Texas. One company. One AI infrastructure buildout. That scale of power demand — and the speed at which it is being deployed — is exactly why communities, utilities, and regulators are struggling to keep up.

TESLA MEGAPACK UNITS — UTILITY-SCALE BESS FOR AI DATA CENTER APPLICATIONS
Battery energy storage is a critical component of responsible AI infrastructure.
