Water is the hidden constraint in AI infrastructure development. Power gets the headlines. Land gets the attention. But water, specifically how much water a data center uses for cooling, is increasingly the factor that determines whether a community accepts or rejects a data center project.

Why Data Centers Use Water

AI compute generates significant heat. Cooling that heat is one of the primary operational challenges of data center design. Traditional cooling approaches use evaporative cooling towers that consume large volumes of water, in some cases millions of gallons per day for a large facility. In water-stressed regions, this creates a direct conflict between data center development and community water needs. Communities near rivers, aquifers, or municipal water systems have legitimate concerns about large new water consumers, and those concerns deserve direct answers before any project advances.

Water-Conscious Cooling Approaches

Modern data center design has developed several approaches that reduce or eliminate water consumption. Closed-loop cooling recirculates cooling water rather than evaporating it, dramatically reducing consumption. Direct liquid cooling cools servers directly with liquid rather than cooling the air around them, reducing overall cooling energy and water needs. Immersion cooling submerges servers in non-conductive liquid, providing highly efficient cooling with minimal water consumption.
